Parts of Britain are likely to be battered by bitterly cold weather as the latest forecasts show temperatures plummeting to as low as -4C in mid-April. WXCharts weather maps, which are prepared using the Met desk data, forecast wintry conditions will impact several UK towns and cities on April 14.

According to the maps, the freezing weather will begin to hit the UK at around 6am on April 14, with parts of Scotland experiencing the sub-zero temperatures. Areas around Inverness could see temperatures plummeting to -4C, the maps have suggested. The Arctic freeze could also spread southwards that could see the mercury plunge to below freezing in some major cities in northern England. The sudden drop would come days after parts of the UK are forecast to swelter in 24C heat this week. The warmest conditions are anticipated in the south, south-east, east, and the Midlands. Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst stated: "On Tuesday, warmer air moves in across England and Wales from the near continent through Tuesday and into Wednesday. We will see temperatures rising to the low 20s, with highs around 20C or 21C on Tuesday, and possibly 23C or 24C come Wednesday. The sunniest skies on Wednesday may be limited to south-east England, where 23C and 24C is most likely."

The Met Office's long-range forecast from April 11-20 reads: "It will likely remain rather changeable during the first part of this period with showers or occasional longer spells of rain affecting many areas.

"Whether this takes the form of successive weather systems pushing in from the Atlantic, or a more slowly evolving weather pattern, is rather more unclear.

"Some drier, brighter interludes will also occur and when winds are light, it should feel quite warm, despite temperatures most likely being close to normal for most.

"Beyond mid-month, high pressure may become rather more dominant, bringing more in the way of drier and perhaps warmer weather, though this will be determined by the location and proximity of where any high is positioned relative to the UK."
