Actually, there is a risk of a serious eye problem called ‘NAION’ associated with the use of this medicine. This problem occurs when the blood supply to the veins of the eyes suddenly reduces or stops, due to which a person can lose his eyesight forever.

This disease is very rare

Even though NAION is a rare disease, doctors take it seriously because of its dangerous consequences. In this disease, vision in one eye can suddenly go away and sometimes the other eye can also be affected. This whole controversy started with a small research in America, in which it was told that taking the medicine ‘Ozempic’ doubles the risk of blindness. Now a big study conducted in Denmark has also confirmed this, due to which the fear of this danger has increased further.

What was revealed in the study?

In a large study, more than 4.24 lakh diabetes patients were examined, in which it was found that the risk of loss of eyesight (NAION) in those taking ‘Ozempic’ was twice as compared to other medicines. According to research, before the year 2018, where there were 60-70 cases annually, after the increase in the use of medicine, this number has now increased to 150. Most of these patients are the same who were taking this medicine for the treatment of diabetes.

Double the risk of other medicines

Another research also found that the risk of this eye disease in new patients taking Ozempic is almost double as compared to other medicines. However, experts say that overall this risk is still very low and most patients do not have any such problem.
