Golf legend Tiger Woods once made it clear that it is not his concern if opponents feel intimidated when they share the course with him. Woods' blunt outlook has not always been well received, yet Rory McIlroy has previously made plain that he is not among those who struggle to compete alongside the five-time Masters champion.
Woods will be absent from Augusta National this week. The 50-year-old has vowed to step back and concentrate on his health after pleading not guilty to charges stemming from a car crash in Florida. The American claimed the most recent of his Masters titles - and the last of his 15 majors - in 2019.
A year prior, he offered guidance to aspiring golfers in the context of his renowned ability to get inside opponents' heads psychologically. "I can't control you. The only thing I can control is me," he told a crowd at his Tiger Jam charity event. "Now, if I do this more efficiently than you, if you get intimidated, that's your own f***ing issue."
McIlroy, for his part, appears to have no difficulties where Woods is concerned. Back in 2021, he paid the star a personal visit following a serious car accident, which left Woods requiring emergency surgery and ruled him out of that year's Masters. "Anytime Tiger Woods tees it up in a golf tournament, it's better," McIlroy said at the time.

"It's better for the tournament. It's better for the players that are involved. It's better for everyone." Woods made his return to Augusta in 2022 and also competed in the 2024 edition - the last occasion he made the cut in a major. While he won't be participating this year, he received a heartfelt mention from McIlroy as he addressed the Champions' Dinner.
"Rory kept it brief," former Masters champion Tommy Aaron said. "He said that we miss Tiger and that he has to do whatever he has to do to take care of himself." Following his car accident in March this year, Woods was charged with driving under the influence and entered a not guilty plea through his lawyers.
"I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today," the American wrote on X, before setting out his plans for the future. "I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health. This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery.
"I'm committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time."
