Job Hugging: Loyalty or Career Suicide? Just imagine, a person is stuck in a job where neither he is getting promoted, nor is his salary increasing, nor is there any passion left in his work. Still he is not ready to leave that chair. In the language of today’s work culture, this is being called ‘Job Hugging’. In the year 2026, this trend is proving to be a silent killer for the careers of the youth. First there was the era of ‘Great Resignation’ when people were leaving jobs in droves, then came ‘Quiet Quitting’ where people were working just for the sake of name. But now the youth are holding on to the same sinking boat due to the fear of leaving the job, which is being called ‘job hugging’.
Another name for fear is job hugging. Job hugging simply means being so attached to your job that you neither accept new challenges nor ask for progress. Only one thing remains in the mind – the work should continue quietly, the boss should be happy and the job should be secure. Experts believe that this is not loyalty towards the company, but fear of the future. Rules like ‘Last in, first out’ and the uncertainty of the market have created so much fear in the minds of the youth that they are stopping their own growth.
The trap of compulsion and EMI in the Indian context This problem becomes even more serious in a country like India. Here, a middle-class youth bears the heavy burden of house rent, children’s school fees, parents’ medicines and car-home EMI. In such a situation, taking a risk on a new path seems like suicide to him. Taking advantage of this compulsion, people are getting trapped in the habit of ‘job hugging’, which is harming them in three ways.
First loss: Your skills are getting rusted. When you stay stuck in the same routine work for years and stay away from new technology or tools, your skills start becoming outdated. In today’s fast-paced world where AI (Artificial Intelligence) and data analytics are prevalent, staying at one place means that you are being left far behind in the race. People who are afraid of change are actually writing the expiry date of their own career.
Second disadvantage: loss of low salary in exchange for loyalty Many international studies have proved that people who change jobs every 2 to 4 years, their salaries are much higher than those who stay at the same place for years. Companies also know that there is no need to give huge increments or promotions to an employee who is not going anywhere. Due to this ‘loyalty’, a professional suffers financial loss worth lakhs of rupees in his lifetime, which he realizes much later.
Third disadvantage: Mental suffocation and ending creativity. When work is done not with passion but with fear, then suffocation starts increasing inside the mind. “You might lose your job, your EMI might stop” – this fear destroys your creativity and brings irritability in your nature. Gradually your performance starts declining and the job which you were considering as your support, starts licking your ability and mental peace like termites.
How to avoid this trap? Avoiding job hugging does not mean that you resign today. The right way to do this is to keep yourself ‘market ready’ even while you are in job. Keep your LinkedIn profile updated, networking with people in the industry and learning something new every day. It is important to understand the difference between trying to save a job and trying to remain competent. If you are capable, there will always be room for you in the market. Remember, even if the cage is made of gold, it takes away the freedom to fly.
