Messaging platform WhatsApp is soon going to bring a big change for its users. Now WhatsApp, which was limited to just chatting and status updates, is preparing to become a new source of income for creators.
According to a recently surfaced beta report, WhatsApp is working on a feature through which users creating channels will be able to charge subscription fees for their content. This means that now it will be possible to earn from WhatsApp channels also.
What is the new Paid Channels feature?
According to the new information, this feature of WhatsApp is currently in the testing stage and has been seen in Android beta version (2.26.14.4). Under this feature, channel creators will be able to share exclusive (paid) content on their channel, to view which users will have to take subscription.
However, WhatsApp has clarified that this feature will be rolled out for all users only after it is completely ready and stable.
How will this system work?
According to the report, creators will get many options in this new system:
- Subscription can be setup from the channel info section only.
- The creator himself will decide how much the subscription fee will be.
- Followers will get the option to watch free and paid content separately.
- Users will be able to easily switch between the two content through one filter
Apart from this, information about how many paid subscribers there are on the channel will also be publicly visible.
Why will subscriber count be important?
WhatsApp is emphasizing on maintaining transparency in this feature. Therefore, along with the total followers of the channel, the number of paid subscribers will also be shown.
This will help new users understand how popular and trustworthy the channel is. Having more subscribers can increase a creator’s credibility, while a lower number can make some users think.
What will change for users and creators?
The biggest advantage of this new feature is that it will be completely optional.
- If users want, they can keep watching free content only.
- Taking subscription will completely depend on their choice
- If creators want, they can run the channel even without paid content.
That means WhatsApp is adding a new earning model without affecting its existing user experience.
It is important to follow the rules
WhatsApp has also clarified that despite having paid content, it will be mandatory to follow the rules of the platform.
- No illegal or objectionable content can be posted
- WhatsApp can take action if rules are violated
- Paid content will also remain under the policy of the platform
What is the bigger meaning of this?
This feature can take WhatsApp to a new level, where it will become not just a messaging app but an earning platform for content creators.
After platforms like YouTube, Instagram and Telegram, now WhatsApp has also joined this race. This can open up new earning opportunities for digital creators.
This new Paid Channels feature of WhatsApp can change the world of content creation in the coming times. While users will get exclusive content, it can become a new revenue source for creators.
Now everyone’s eyes are on when and in what form WhatsApp launches this feature for all users.
