New Delhi: A new research has shockingly revealed that marriage not only provides emotional support but can also help in preventing diseases like cancer. The study found that the risk of cancer among unmarried people is much higher than that of married people.
According to research, the risk of cancer in unmarried men is 68 percent higher than that of married, divorced or widowed men. At the same time, this risk was found to be 83 percent higher in unmarried women. This study has been published in Cancer Research Communications. This has started a new discussion on the deep relationship between marriage and health.
Why does marriage provide security?
It is said that marriage protects health in many ways. The most important is social support. Married people are encouraged by their spouses to have regular doctor checkups, cancer screening and timely treatment. People living alone often neglect getting tested due to loneliness.
The lead author of the study, Paulo S. Pinheiro says unmarried people are more socially isolated, which leads to less preventive care. Apart from this, married people adopt more healthy habits. They have less habit of smoking and excessive drinking, which are major causes of lung and cervical cancer.
women benefit more
In earlier studies it was believed that men get more benefits from marriage, but in this research the opposite was seen. Women seem to be getting more protection against cancer through marriage.
Scientists believe that women who have never given birth to a child may have an increased risk of ovarian and uterine cancer. Marriage and family helps reduce this risk.
Black men benefit most
One special thing that came to light in the study was that black men benefit the most from marriage. This clearly shows how important a strong family support system is. With the care of the spouse, the disease is detected early and treatment becomes easier.
support is most important
Many experts believe that marriage itself does not directly prevent cancer, but the benefits associated with it, such as better health facilities and support, are the real reason. Ultimately the researchers recommend that every person, whether married or unmarried, needs strong social support.
The support of family, friends or community can be of great help in fighting diseases like cancer. In view of the decreasing marriage rate, it is necessary to create a good health checkup system and support network for everyone.
