Foreigners steal cash, gold ring from Chinese tourist in Thailand’s Pattaya

The woman and her boyfriend filed a complaint to Pattaya City Police Station at around 1 a.m., The Tiger reported.

She told police the incident took place as they were walking, when two unidentified foreign men approached them, struck up a friendly conversation, and then asked to see Chinese currency, Bangkok Post reported.

She said the men showed interest in the cash and handed her one of their wallets as a form of security, which led her to trust them and pass over her own wallet for inspection.

The suspects later returned the wallet before quickly leaving the scene.

Upon checking her belongings, the victim discovered that 1,000 yuan (US$146), 5,000 baht ($155) and a 2.5-gram gold ring were missing.

Police are expanding the investigation and tracked down the suspects.

The theft comes at a time the Thai government has been stepping up efforts to revive its tourism sector amid a drop in foreign arrivals.

From Jan. 1 to March 29, the country welcomed 9.1 million foreign visitors, down 2.29% year-on-year.
