The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has appointed Vibhor Jain as its MD and CEO, with effect from April 7. Jain was serving as the platform’s acting CEO and MD since the past year. He has been with ONDC for almost five years now.

Jain cofounded air quality management solutions firm Atlanta Healthcare, serving as its CEO till 2017 and director for close to eight years before joining ONDC as a strategic advisor in 2021.

“Going forward, we are concentrating on what open, interoperable infrastructure can uniquely enable – things that no single platform has the incentive or the architecture to do,” Jain told ET.

The network will focus on creating deeper value for its target cohort, including farmers, artisans, mom-and-pop stores, gig workers, first-time investors and daily commuters, he added.

The state-backed ecommerce network had been on the lookout for a new MD and CEO ever since founding member T Koshy quit the position in April last year. ONDC had formed an eight-member executive team to oversee operations post the exit of its key management personnel, including CBO Shireesh Joshi, who stepped down in March last year.

With the appointment, the leadership rejig that the network had earlier called a “transition phase” has cooled down. Over the previous year, the network appointed Rohit Lohia as chief business officer and Manoj Thakur as chief technology officer.

Founded in 2021, ONDC is a section-8 company aimed at democratising digital commerce and enabling smaller businesses to connect with buyers through digital platforms. It counts the Quality Council of India and Protean eGov Technologies as founding members, while the likes of Kotak Mahindra, Axis Bank, SIDBI, ICICI are among its investors.

Ministry of MSME’s joint secretary Ateesh Singh and chief commissioner of Income Tax and former DPIIT joint secretary Sanjiv Singh are on ONDC’s board.

“I am confident that under your leadership, the network will scale from 20 Mn transactions per month to 200 Mn transactions per month in the near future,” Singh said on Jain’s appointment.

The network is live in 616 cities with over 7.64 Lakh sellers and service providers. It fulfilled over 1.6 Cr orders in May 2025, the last time it reported monthly numbers. It claims to have 26 live domains, including food and beverage, fashion, home, grocery, beauty and personal care among others.
