Pranay Verma Takes on a New Diplomatic Role

New Delhi: On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed that Pranay Verma, a seasoned diplomat, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Belgium, with additional responsibilities for the European Union.

According to the MEA's announcement, "Shri Pranay Verma (IFS:1994), who is currently serving as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh, will take on the role of Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union."

The ministry indicated that Verma is expected to commence his new duties soon.

He will be taking over from Saurabh Kumar, who concluded his term earlier this year. Kumar also held the position of Ambassador to the European Union and Luxembourg during his time in Brussels.

This appointment is particularly significant as India strengthens its ties with Europe, especially following the recent India-European Union free trade agreement finalized in January.

This agreement is anticipated to enhance bilateral trade by reducing tariffs on over 90% of goods, impacting trade that constitutes nearly a quarter of the global GDP. It is expected to make Indian exports more competitive while decreasing the prices of European products like cars and wines in India.

Officials believe that Verma's role will be crucial in navigating the agreement through the European Parliament, a process that entails intricate legal evaluations and translations into 27 languages prior to ratification.

The Indian Embassy in Brussels, which has been operational since 1948, acts as a vital diplomatic center, representing India in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the European Union. Verma’s new position will place him at the forefront of India’s strategic, economic, and political interactions in the region.

As a member of the 1994 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, Verma possesses over thirty years of diplomatic experience, including a previous role as Ambassador to Vietnam. His knowledge of East Asia is viewed as beneficial as India seeks to broaden its international partnerships.

Currently, as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Verma has been instrumental in enhancing bilateral relations.

Earlier this week, he met with Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, expressing New Delhi’s commitment to fostering "positive, constructive, and people-centric ties" based on shared interests.

This meeting highlights the ongoing efforts by both nations to mend relations following recent political changes in Dhaka, emphasizing Verma’s capability in managing significant diplomatic tasks before his transition to Brussels.
