India is witnessing a rapid transition in cooking fuel usage as more than 5 lakh LPG connections have been converted to PNG (Piped Natural Gas) in recent weeks. According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, over 4 lakh conversions happened in just five weeks, while demand for PNG continues to surge.

At the same time, the government has stepped up distribution of 5 kg LPG cylinders, with nearly 1 lakh small cylinders being supplied daily to meet short-term demand.

Despite concerns triggered by global supply disruptions, officials have clarified that:

• Domestic LPG supply remains stable
• Distributors have adequate stock
• Around 60% of India’s LPG demand is now met through domestic production
• Crude oil reserves are sufficient

This reassurance aims to prevent panic among consumers amid recent geopolitical tensions.

The shift toward PNG has been accelerated due to supply challenges caused by tensions in West Asia, which temporarily impacted LPG availability.

To reduce dependency on cylinder-based supply, the government has made a key policy move:

👉 PNG is now mandatory in areas where pipeline infrastructure exists

• Consumers must switch within 3 months
• Failure to comply may lead to discontinuation of LPG supply

However, exceptions will be allowed in areas where pipeline connectivity is not feasible.

To simplify the transition, the government has introduced an online portal where users can:

• Submit requests to surrender LPG connections
• Schedule cylinder collection from home
• Receive refund of security deposit

This move is part of a broader plan to streamline energy usage and reduce logistical challenges.

To manage demand efficiently, the government has revised gas allocation priorities:

• Full supply ensured for:
  • Domestic households (PNG)
  • Transport sector (CNG)
• Limited supply (around 80%) for:
  • Industrial users

Additionally, extra LNG cargo imports are being arranged to stabilize supply.

Commercial LPG supply has been restored to about 70% of normal levels, with priority given to:

• Hospitals
• Educational institutions
• Hotels and restaurants
• Packaging and pharmaceutical sectors

Online booking for LPG cylinders has also reached nearly 98% efficiency, improving accessibility.

Amid gas-related challenges, the government is also promoting induction cooktops as an alternative. To support this shift, a major expansion in electricity generation is planned.

• Total addition: 22,361 MW

Breakdown:

• Solar energy: 10,000 MW
• Thermal power: 3,500 MW
• Wind energy: 2,500 MW
• Hybrid projects: 3,461 MW
• Battery storage (BESS): 1,900 MW
• Pumped storage: 250 MW
• Hydropower: 750 MW

This expansion aims to strengthen India’s energy security and support cleaner alternatives.

The government’s multi-pronged strategy—promoting PNG, boosting LPG supply, and expanding power capacity—signals a major shift in India’s energy ecosystem.

While LPG remains available, the long-term focus is clearly on pipeline gas and electric alternatives, ensuring more reliable, efficient, and sustainable energy access for households and industries alike.
