The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has marked another significant achievement with the successful completion of the second Integrated Air Drop Test (IADT-02) for its Gaganyaan mission. This test took place at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, where scientists evaluated the recovery system of the crew module. The primary goal of this successful test is to ensure that astronauts can be safely extracted from space upon their return to Earth.
Chinook Helicopter Lifts Crew Module
According to information shared on ISRO's website, the Indian Air Force's Chinook helicopter lifted an artificial crew module weighing approximately 5.7 tons to an altitude of about 3 kilometers. The module was then released over a designated drop zone in the sea near Sriharikota. During its descent, ten parachutes of four different types were deployed in a precise sequence, gradually reducing the speed for a safe landing.
Crucial Test for Gaganyaan G1 Mission
ISRO stated that the artificial module was successfully recovered with the coordination of the Indian Navy. The IADT-02 test verified the parachute-based deceleration system within the crew module. This test represents a significant step forward in preparations for the Gaganyaan G1 mission, with participation from the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, and DRDO.
What Was Achieved Through This Test?
This accomplishment by ISRO demonstrates that the recovery system for the crew module can function effectively in real-world conditions. According to scientists, such tests are crucial for ensuring the safety of astronauts, especially in emergency situations during the mission. This successful test has indeed provided a substantial boost to India's preparations for the Gaganyaan mission.
