Sky News was brought to an abrupt halt as presenter Gareth Barlow was handed the latest update into an investigation taking place after a fatal road traffic incident which killed two young children. He halted the programme to explain that the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IPOC) has issued a fresh statement about the incident.
Barlow told viewers: "I want to bring our viewers on Sky News just a little bit of an update, some breaking news from the Independent Office of Police Conduct. It refers to an incident in July 2023 - we're just hearing a statement from the IPOC director Amanda Rowe, saying that they are investigating complaints made against 11 Metropolitan Police officers over their handling of the initial investigation into a road traffic incident in which two young children sadly died and multiple others were injured at the Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon."
Barlow went on: "The IPOC began their investigation, they say, in August 2025, following a referral from the Met Police of complaints made on behalf of individuals who are affected by that incident.
"They relate to concerns about the standard of investigation including its management and direction, and the conduct of the investigation team and their engagement with the victims."
Barlow went on to read aloud from the statement, with the IPOC saying it is "investigating allegations that Met officers provided false and misleading information to those affected, and whether those officers' treatment of those affected was influenced by their race."
He read: "'We have now served notices to four serving officers whose ranks are Commander, Detective Chief Inspector, Detective Sergeant and Detective Constable, and a former Detective Inspector. Their conduct is being investigated at the level of gross misconduct. Two Detective Constables are being investigated at misconduct level. The investigation is ongoing and should further conduct issues be identified, then officers will be served notices'."
Viewers said the news is "long overdue", with one tweeting: "This is long overdue. Hope justice is served for those two girls."
