Vietnam has claimed the top two spots on Travel + Leisure’s “hidden gem cities” rankings, ahead of European and North African destinations.
Released April 1, the list evaluated 23 cities on travel costs, weather and the numbers of activities and restaurants relative to each city’s size. Hoi An scored 92.96 to claim first place. Da Nang was second.

The magazine praised Hoi An as a “living heritage” that impresses visitors with lantern-lined alleyways, east-west architecture and aged buildings full of history.
Most attractions, cafes, restaurants, and craft shops are close together. The experience is also enhanced by local foods like banh mi, tall mop (thick noodles with pork) and white rose dumplings.
Taylor McIntyre, editor of Travel + Leisuresaid Hoi An feels “like a window into the past” with its colorful houses, temples and silk lanterns.

Beyond the old town, visitors can explore nearby areas. Easy travel between Hoi An and Da Nang is an advantage.
The list also features Bruges (Belgium), Essaouira and Chefchaouen (Morocco), Calabria (Italy), Paros (Greece), Cambridge (England), Belgrade (Serbia), and Cascais (Portugal).
