beirut14 april. Lebanon and Israel are scheduled to hold direct diplomatic talks for the first time in decades in Washington on Tuesday (early Wednesday, Indian time). The talks are taking place after more than a month of war between Israel and the Hezbollah terrorist group, which has deeply hurt the small Mediterranean country.
1993 This will be the first talks between the two countries after
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Israel’s US Ambassador to the United States Yechiel Leiter and Lebanon’s US Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad will participate in the talks in Washington. This will be the first talks between the two countries since 1993.
Hezbollah is opposing this direct talks
However, Hezbollah is opposing these direct talks and will not have any representative. Wafik Safa, a high-ranking member of the terrorist group’s political council, told the AP news agency that it would not abide by any agreement reached in the talks.
Israeli attacks in Lebanon at least 2,089 people have died
Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed at least 2,089 people, including 252 women, 166 children and 88 medical workers, while 6,762 others have been injured, according to the health ministry. More than 10 lakh people have been displaced.
The Lebanese government hopes that talks will lead to an end to the war. Interestingly, on one hand, Iran has made talks with the US conditional on ending wars in Lebanon and the entire region, while Lebanon itself is adamant on representing the talks.
But Iran-backed Hezbollah and other critics are skeptical of such direct talks. He believes that the Beirut-based Lebanese government has no solid base and must support Iran, Hezbollah’s main ally and patron.
The Israeli army has continued its offensive into southern Lebanon, which some Israeli officials say is aimed at creating a ‘security zone’ from the border to the Litani River, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) to the north.
Israel’s defense minister says millions of people displaced from southern Lebanon will not be allowed to return home until the area is demilitarized and Israel is confident that communities living in its north are safe.
As for Hezbollah, although weakened by its last war with Israel, which ended in November 2024, it still carries out daily drone, rocket and artillery attacks on ground troops inside northern Israel and Lebanon. Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassim gave an inflammatory speech calling on Lebanon to cancel the talks.
