Wrong FASTags to Be Blacklisted: National Highways Authority of India Tightens Toll Rules

The National Highways Authority of India has taken a strict step to fix growing issues in India’s FASTag system. In a recent directive, it has asked all banks issuing FASTags to immediately verify vehicle registration details and identify tags with incorrect information.

This move comes after multiple complaints from toll plazas, where the vehicle number shown on FASTag scanners did not match the actual number plate. Such mismatches not only create confusion at toll booths but also raise concerns about revenue leakage and system reliability.

According to NHAI, the root of the problem lies in older FASTags that were issued before full integration with the VAHAN database. At that time, much of the verification was done manually, leading to errors in vehicle data. Now that the system is fully digitized, these discrepancies are becoming more visible.

To address this, NHAI has directed banks to find all FASTags linked with incorrect or invalid vehicle numbers and blacklist them immediately. This means such FASTags will stop working until the details are corrected, directly impacting users who have outdated or wrong information linked to their tags.

This step becomes even more important as India prepares to roll out the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system. Under this system, vehicles won’t need to stop at toll plazas, and toll collection will happen automatically using digital tracking. In such a setup, accurate vehicle data becomes critical.

If incorrect details are found, authorities may send e-notices directly to vehicle owners, and violations could also attract action under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

In short, if your FASTag has outdated or incorrect vehicle details, it’s better to get it updated soon—otherwise, you might face issues at tolls or even penalties in the near future.
