The Punjab Kings used their new ball to create an explosive beginning during their first match of IPL 2026 season at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The Mumbai Indians who batted first at their home ground faced an initial setback when Arshdeep Singh dismissed opener Ryan Rickelton during the third over.
The next ball Suryakumar Yadav who batted third for the hosts got out to first ball duck because of Arshdeep. The latest failure of Suryakumar pushed him into an unwanted record list which contains Mumbai Indians batters who have achieved the most ducks in IPL history.
Suryakumar entered the match with 106 runs from four IPL 2026 matches and a batting average of 26.50. His first-ball dismissal against Punjab Kings added another low point to his season.
Suryakumar reached this duck milestone to become the third Mumbai Indians player who has recorded 10 or more ducks during his IPL career. The IPL record shows the most ducks produced by various Mumbai Indians players who have taken the field.
Most Ducks for MI in IPL:
| Batters | Ducks |
| Rohit Sharma | 16 |
| Harbhajan Singh | 13 |
| Suryakumar Yadav | 10 |
| Ambati Rayudu | 9 |
Suryakumar has accumulated 11 ducks in the IPL, which includes one duck from his previous time with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
At present Suryakumar stands with Rohit Sharma and Harbhajan Singh as his namesake but he still needs more time to reach the all-time unwanted IPL record.
The Australian power-hitter Glenn Maxwell holds the record for the most IPL ducks with 19 ducks which he achieved while playing for different teams. Dinesh Karthik who is an experienced wicketkeeper-batter follows him with 18 ducks. Rohit Sharma has 18 ducks which he achieved during 271 IPL innings.

Mumbai Indians began their Wankhede match with difficulties after they lost two wickets at the score of 12 runs during the first 2.2 overs. The bowler named Arshdeep Singh dismissed Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav on back-to-back balls.
The Mumbai Indians managed to recover from their early powerplay collapse by reaching 48-2 at their sixth-over mark.
The Hardik Pandya-led team needs to win this match because they currently face a three-match losing streak which puts them in last place of the IPL 2026 points table. A fourth consecutive defeat will severely undermine their chances of making the playoffs.
