Dronacharya Award winning coach Naval Singh, respected in the Indian sports world, has been removed from the post by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) after allegations of harassment. The action was taken with immediate effect on April 18, after Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra and Paralympic gold medalist Sumit Antil filed allegations of mental harassment against him.
PCI chief Devendra Jhajharia confirmed the decision and said that considering the seriousness of the matter, action has been taken against the coach. Besides, consideration is also being given to constituting a formal inquiry committee within the committee to investigate this entire episode.
Sumit Antil has filed an official complaint with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in this matter. She alleged that Naval Singh repeatedly verbally abused and mentally harassed not only her but also Neeraj Chopra. Sumit Antil said, “He mentally harassed us and misbehaved with us, i.e. mine and Neeraj’s families. He seems mentally unstable.” They also alleged that the coach crossed professional boundaries and made derogatory comments about their families.
According to Antil, the situation worsened over time, following which he was forced to lodge a formal complaint. He also said, “He would deliberately share recordings of his abusive speeches with our managers so that they could reach out to us.”
Let us tell you that Naval Singh was awarded the Dronacharya Award in the year 2015, currently he was training athlete Sachin Yadav. Sachin Yadav had finished fourth in the World Championships last year, where Neeraj Chopra struggled with injury and finished eighth. No official response has come yet from Naval Singh in this matter.
Sumit Antil also told that apart from Neeraj Chopra, his complaint is also supported by other disabled javelin throwers, Navdeep Singh and Sandeep Chaudhary. He questioned the coach’s motives, indicating that his behavior may have been influenced by competing interests.
