The BCCI has decided to provide Ajit Agarkar with a reward because he made courageous decisions during his time as chief selector. In July 2023, Ajit Agarkar assumed his position as BCCI chief selector. His tenure began during India’s transition phase which especially affected Test cricket when both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma left the team.

Agarkar’s precise decisions during the Test team scrutiny period helped India achieve exceptional success in white-ball matches. The BCCI decided to extend Agarkar's contract as the Men in Blue prepare for the 2027 World Cup.

Agarkar became BCCI chief selector on July 4 2023 after establishing himself as one of India's greatest ODI bowlers. He replaced Chetan Sharma and served during major ICC events — the 2023 World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy, and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Agarkar took charge of the situation because both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were approaching the end of their playing careers. The chief selector had to make difficult decisions about the iconic duo because they continued to play important roles in India's white-ball team yet their Test performance was declining.

India’s international record since Agarkar’s appointment:

Matches Won Lost Tied Draw NR W/L
152 105 36 4 3 4 2.916

The board needed to communicate with Kohli and Rohit about Test cricket retirement because both players had achieved extreme popularity with their fans. Agarkar handled it effectively and ensured a smooth transition. Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket in May 2025, after which the BCCI selection committee named Shubman Gill as the new Test captain.

Ajit Agarkar’s current contract as BCCI chief selector is set to end in June 2026. However, according to Express Sports, the BCCI leadership is highly impressed with his decision-making as selection committee chairman. As per the report, Agarkar is likely to receive a one-year extension, allowing him to continue as chief selector until June 2027.

Ajit Agarkar successfully managed the transition phase while implementing several innovative strategies that produced outstanding outcomes for India's white-ball teams. Agarkar selected Suryakumar Yadav to become India's T20I captain after Rohit Sharma retired from active duty despite Hardik Pandya being the leading candidate from various sources.

The decision brought successful results because Suryakumar led India to their third T20 World Cup title which they won through exceptional performance.

Ajit Agarkar supported Ishan Kishan’s return to the squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Ishan proved his value by becoming one of India’s key batters, scoring 317 runs at an average of 35.22 and an explosive strike rate of 193.29. Agarkar has demonstrated his skills as chief selector through his impactful decisions made during critical time periods which led to BCCI granting him a contract extension that lasts until June 2027.
