Kindle E-reader: Amazon’s decision – Kindles before 2012 will no longer work, know how to upgrade

Kindle E-reader: Amazon will stop supporting Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets released in 2012 or earlier, making it no longer possible to download new books, access the Kindle Store, or use the “Send to Kindle” service from these devices. Existing content will remain available, but factory resetting these devices will render them unusable. This will affect approximately 20 lakh devices. According to ‘Metro’ report, millions of Amazon Kindle devices are going to stop working in a few weeks and it has been termed as a ‘nightmare’ by book lovers.

Kindle 1st Gen (2007)
Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009–2010)
Kindle Keyboard (2010)
Kindle 4 and Kindle Touch (2011)
Kindle 5 (2012)
Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen (2012)
Kindle Fire 1st Gen (2011), Fire 2nd Gen (2012), Fire HD 7 (2012), Fire HD 8.9 (2012)

what won’t work
Users will be able to read previously downloaded e-books, but purchasing or downloading new content will not be possible. If a user deregisters or factory resets the device, it will become completely useless. Kindle Fire users will no longer be able to purchase or download content.

The company has said that supporting older devices is no longer possible due to hardware and security limitations. Amazon is offering affected users a 20% discount and book credits so they can upgrade to new Kindle models.

‘Soft Bricking’
Tech experts believe that this step is right from security point of view, but users are considering it as ‘Soft Bricking’. Soft bricking is a condition in Android or other electronic gadgets where the device does not turn on completely, but shows signs of turning on (such as a logo, boot loop, or recovery screen).
