She emphasized that as women continue to excel in various sectors, their increased involvement in politics would be advantageous. Nehwal stated, "I was optimistic about the Bill's passage. It would have positively impacted our country. Women are advancing in all areas, and their political participation is crucial. I remain hopeful for its future approval."

Prime Minister Modi Criticizes Opposition Following Bill's Rejection

The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026, were intended to enhance the Lok Sabha's seat count to 850. However, opposition parties voted against the Constitution Amendment Bill during a recent session. In the voting process, 298 members supported the bill while 230 opposed it.

Following the bill's rejection, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the opposition for obstructing the Women's Reservation Bill, claiming they have dashed the aspirations of many. He remarked that their actions were a setback for women's dignity, a slight that the female electorate would not forget.

A Blow to Women's Dignity

PM Modi articulated that the bill's failure represents a significant affront to women's self-respect, stating, "Women may overlook many things, but they will always remember an insult to their pride." He warned that the opposition's actions would lead to repercussions from the public, as women are aware of the opposition's intentions and will hold them accountable.

He further elaborated on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Amendment, describing it as a transformative initiative aimed at granting overdue rights and fostering new opportunities for women. Modi noted that the legislation sought to eliminate systemic barriers and enhance political representation across all states, irrespective of their size or location.
