Ahmedabad: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain Ajinkya Rahane clarified why all-rounder Cameron Green did not bowl against Gujarat Titansstating that the decision had nothing to do with external restrictions but was purely due to fitness concerns.

KKR’s most expensive signing of IPL 2026, Green impressed with the bat, scoring 79 off 55 balls, but his absence from the bowling attack raised several questions.

Green’s cramps ruled out bowling role

Addressing the issue in the post-match press conference, Rahane made it clear that Green was struggling physically during the game, which prevented him from contributing with the ball.

“He was actually struggling with cramps, which is why he was in and out of the field,” Rahane explained.

The clarification comes after earlier speculation around workload management and possible influence from Cricket Australia regarding Green’s bowling duties.

Rahane focuses on positives despite another defeat

KKR slumped to their fifth defeat in six matches, continuing a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign. Despite the loss, Rahane chose to highlight positives, particularly Green’s return to form with the bat.

“It’s never easy to come out and talk immediately after losing a game, but I’d like to focus on the positives,” Rahane said.

He praised Green’s innings, noting how the Australian all-rounder handled pressure after KKR lost early wickets.

“Cameron Green’s innings was outstanding. He was under pressure, but the way he counter-attacked and took on their bowlers was amazing to see,” he added.

KKR still searching for winning combination

KKR managed to post a competitive total of around 180, thanks largely to Green’s effort, but once again failed to defend it.

Rahane also commended the bowling unit for their persistence despite a string of poor results.

“It’s not easy when things aren’t going your way, but they kept coming back and pushing hard,” he said.

However, the team continues to struggle to find the right balance and consistency, leaving them at the bottom of the points table with just one point from six matches.

No external restrictions this time

Earlier in the tournament, Rahane had hinted at external workload considerations influencing Green’s bowling role. However, in this instance, the skipper dismissed such factors, making it clear that fitness alone dictated the decision.

This effectively puts to rest speculation about interference from Cricket Australia regarding Green’s utilisation.

Conclusion

While Cameron Green’s batting form offered a silver lining for KKR, his inability to bowl due to cramps underlined the team’s ongoing struggles with balance and execution. As losses continue to mount, KKR will need both fitness and form from their key players to turn their campaign around.
