Several weeks have passed since the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, but no concrete decision has been taken yet regarding his funeral. According to reports, the Iranian administration is citing security and systemic challenges as the main reasons in this matter.
Government assessing possible threats
It is being told that the government is deeply assessing the possible dangers associated with a big public event. There is concern among officials especially about possible attacks from Israel and the chaos that can arise during any large gathering. For this reason, it is being decided to postpone big events like funerals.
Analysts believe that in the current situation the Iranian leadership is avoiding taking any kind of risk. According to Behnam Taleblu, an expert associated with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, the government is currently under so much pressure that it is hesitant in giving permission for any major event. He says that the situation in the country is not such that the governance system can take any big risk.
Death occurred on 28th February
It is noteworthy that 86-year-old Khamenei was killed in a joint air strike by America and Israel on February 28. Regional tension increased further after this incident. However, even after so much time, he has not been given a final farewell, which is considered an unusual situation.
In contrast, when Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini died in 1989, a grand state funeral was held for him in Tehran, which was attended by millions of people. But this time the circumstances are completely different and there is no possibility of any large group gathering at the moment.
According to reports, Iranian officials are considering Mashhad as a possible venue for the funeral, as security management there may be relatively easier. Earlier it was planned to hold a state funeral for three days from March 4, but it was canceled due to increasing attacks by America and Israel.
Although the officials had cited the fear of huge crowd as the reason for the initial delay, the new date has not been decided yet. This clearly indicates that the current situation in the country is not favorable for this important event.
