New Delhi: ISRO has released the Indian Space Situational Awareness Report for 2025 (ISSAR-2025) during the inaugural session of second international conference on Spacecraft Mission Operations (SMOPS-2026) in Bengaluru. The report provides an overview of Indian assets in Earth orbit, as well as the steps taken to secure them and prevent any collisions. ISRO conducts Collision Avoidance Analysis (COLA) before the launch of its rockets, as well as collision avoidance manoeuvres (CAMs) of operational spacecraft, to prevent close approaches or conjunctions.

ISRO launched five missions in 2025, four from the Second Launch Pad (SLP) and one from the First Launch Pad (FLP) at Sriharikota. The LVM3-M6 flight to deploy the BlueBird Block-2 flock of satellites on 12 December, 2025 was delayed by 41 seconds because of a COLA recommendation. The US Space Command issued more than 1,50,000 alerts through the Combined Space Operations Centre (CSpOC) for ISRO’s satellites in Earth orbit over 2025. ISRO executed four CAMs in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO), and 14 for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, including one for the NISAR mission, which NASA terms as a Risk Mitigation Manoeuvre.

Chandrayaan 2 dodged LRO twice

ISRO’s Chandrayaan 2 orbiter continues to study the Moon, and over the course of 2025 executed two CAMs to avoid getting too close to NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) on 1 January and 24 July 2025. A total of 16 manoeuvres were conducted on the Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft over the course of 2025. ISRO also carefully evaluated the planned manoeuvres of its satellites, to minimise subsequent conjunctions. These include the CAM manoeuvres as well. 82 planned burns were revised to avoid close-approaches with satellites in LEO after the burn. The IRNSS-1D satellite was raised to a graveyard orbit of nearly 600 km after the end of its mission. ISRO is committed to the sustainable use of outer space and Earth orbit, and India produces the least amount of orbital debris among all major spacefaring nations.
