Concerns Over Contaminated Baby Food

A baby food company named HiPP is facing serious allegations in Austria. Reports indicate that a jar of their baby food contained rat poison. In response to safety concerns, over 1,000 SPAR supermarkets across the country have recalled this product.

Presence of Rat Poison in Baby Food
According to a statement from the Burgenland police, a customer claimed to have found rat poison in a 190-gram jar of baby food labeled with carrots and potatoes. The company acknowledged that it cannot rule out the possibility of dangerous substances being added to the product, suggesting that the jar of HiPP Vegetable Carrot with Potato may have been tampered with. They also admitted that consuming the contents of the jar could be fatal.

Laboratory Testing of the Jar
The police noted that the affected jars had a sticker with a red circle on the bottom, and many had open or damaged lids, missing safety seals, or unusual odors. Similar jars were also tested in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, where toxic substances were detected. Authorities in Austria were alerted to this danger following investigations conducted in Germany.

Refunds for Affected Customers
In light of the situation, HiPP stated, 'Based on our current information, this serious incident involves external criminal interference affecting the SPAR Austria distribution channel.' Both SPAR and HiPP have urged customers not to consume the contents of the jars purchased from SPAR Austria. Customers returning these products will receive a full refund. The police have also advised individuals who may have come into contact with the product to wash their hands thoroughly.
