You know that one guy who throws on something random and suddenly everyone’s rethinking their entire wardrobe? That’s what’s happening in menswear right now. Ryan Gosling wore a slightly oversized and slouchy sweater in his latest movie, Hail Mary, and somehow managed to make knitting feel cool again.
No crazy silhouette. No loud branding. In fact, it looks like something your dad probably wore in winters and is still sitting at the back of his cupboard. It still works because it doesn't feel too styled.
But you know what’s the best part of it all? People aren’t just trying to buy this sweater. They’re trying to make it.

Within days of it going viral, knitting communities did what they do best. They broke the sweater down. Multiple social media posts popped up analysing the stitch pattern, the weight, the texture. DIY creators started sharing how you could recreate it. Some even started putting together knitting kits inspired by the look: yarn, pattern, instructions, the whole thing.
Not dupes or replicas. Actual knitting kits.
For years, fashion has been about access. Can you afford it? Can you get it? Can you pull it off? Now it's becoming more about participation. Can you make it yourself? Can you understand it? Knitting requires patience in a world that rewards speed. And weirdly, that’s exactly why it feels aspirational right now.
The demand for this sweater got so real that Mary Maxim dropped a “Project Hail Mary” knitting kit and it immediately sold out.

I'm talking thousands of orders, pre-orders around $90, and even people signing up for knit-alongs just to get through it together.
And this sweater didn’t just happen. Costume designer Glyn Dillon originally found a vintage wolf cardigan, but it looked too aggressive. Then Ryan Gosling stepped in and suggested swapping the wolves for foxes because the former looked too aggressive for a teacher. In a lengthy Instagram post, Dillon explained why he swapped it with a fox.
“Ryan came in with an unexpected suggestion … He’d been staying in London and had experienced sightings of our urban fox population … A lot of Londoners consider them pests, but I’m more inclined to agree with Ryan; they’re special, and it’s always a bit magical when you spot one crossing your path at night. So he asked if we could change the wolves to foxes. We were extremely tight on time, but this was also a chance to change the faces and the bloodred footprints.”

Looks like the only way forward in men’s fashion is to master the art of nonchalance. The more effortless your outfit looks, the more people will relate to it.
