Tezzbuzz Desk- Wheat is an important food item, stored in large quantities in most households, especially in villages. But, if it is not stored properly, it can spoil quickly, and its grains can become hollow due to weevil attack. The weevil’s larvae grow inside the wheat and hollow it out from inside. To prevent this, there are some simple measures by which wheat can be kept safe.
What is a mite and why does it appear?
Weevil is the biggest problem of wheat. It is an insect that grows in wheat, whose larvae enter inside the wheat grains and gradually hollow them out. When weevils are infested, wheat becomes difficult to use, and it completely spoils.
neem leaves
Neem leaves are an excellent remedy to prevent mites. Neem leaves have a bitter smell and also have antibacterial properties. These properties help in keeping pests away. For this, first dry the neem leaves in the shade. Then keep them in the place where wheat is stored.
slaked lime
Another effective solution is slaked lime. It helps absorb excess moisture and its alkaline nature forms a natural barrier to pests. You can protect wheat from weevils by using lime. Before adding lime to wheat, keep it tied in a fine cloth so that it does not mix directly with the wheat.
How to store wheat
storing wheat in bins
- use polythene bags: While storing wheat in the bag, do not put the wheat directly in the bag. Instead, put a polythene bag of the same size inside the container. This will help keep moisture out.
- add neem leaves: Put a bunch of neem leaves in the bottom of the pot. This will protect against insects.
- use lime: After filling half the bag of wheat, add dry pebble-like pieces of slaked lime tied in a fine cloth.
- add wheat again: After this, add wheat again and when the pot becomes a little empty, add neem leaves on top. Now close the container tightly.
storing wheat in containers
- add neem leaves first: Add a layer of neem leaves in the bottom of the container.
- use of lime and wheat: Next, add a layer of lime and then fill with wheat. If the container is large, neem and lime can be added in two to three layers.
- last layer: Add neem leaves again on top.
Things to keep in mind while storing wheat
- dry wheat: The most important thing is that wheat should be completely dry before storing it. If you have brought wheat from the market or farm, then keep it in the sun for at least 1-2 days so that excess moisture gets removed from it.
- moisture protection: There should not be moisture at the storage place. Check the cuttings and containers beforehand to make sure they are completely dry.
- take care of the environment: The place where you are keeping wheat should not be moist. Therefore, it is important to store wheat properly, especially during the rainy season.
Other tips to prevent mites
- Before storing wheat, also keep in mind its quality. Fresh wheat is less susceptible to weevil infestation.
- Keep checking the wheat regularly. If you notice any unusual smell or sign of mites, immediately remove it and dispose of it properly.
By taking proper precautions while storing wheat, you can avoid weevils and keep your wheat safe for a long time. Using Neem leaves and slaked lime is a natural and effective solution, which will keep your wheat free from weevil infestation and safe.
