Rashid Khan, the renowned mystery spinner from the Afghanistan National Cricket Team, is widely regarded as one of the best spinners in the world. He revealed during IPL 2023 that he had been offered citizenship from both India and Australia but chose to decline both offers.
Insights from the Upcoming Book
Further details about Rashid's decisions are documented in the upcoming book titled “Rashid Khan: From Streets to Stardom,” set to be released on April 20. The author, Mohammad Hand Jafar, sheds light on Rashid's experiences.
According to reports, both India and Australia had extended offers not only for citizenship but also for him to play cricket for their respective teams. In the book, Jafar quotes Rashid as saying, “I received such offers from both Australia and India. However, I told them that if I do not play for my country, I will not play for another.”
BCCI's Offer to Rashid Khan
Rashid himself disclosed that he was approached by a BCCI official during IPL 2023 with an offer to play for India. He recounted the conversation, stating, “I met with a BCCI official. We started talking, and he mentioned that the situation in my country is quite dire. He suggested that I come to India, where they would provide me with Indian documents and allow me to play cricket here. I was taken aback by what he said and didn’t know how to respond. But I laughed and thanked him, saying I am playing for my country, Afghanistan.”
