What is the ‘After Reading’ feature?

WhatsApp is developing a new “After Reading” option. Unlike the existing ‘disappearing messages’ feature, this new version starts the timer when the message is opened and read by the recipient.

If a message is not opened, it remains as it is.

The timer starts only when the message is read.

After the specified time passes, the message automatically disappears.

5 minutes

1 hour

12 hours

For example, if you choose a 5-minute timer, the message will be deleted 5 minutes after being read—regardless of when the recipient opens the message.

Why is this update important?

This feature is designed with privacy in mind and can prove to be a game-changer for secure conversations.

Best for sharing OTPs, passwords or confidential information.

Prevents messages from expiring before they can be seen.

This will work alongside the existing ‘disappearing messages’ feature, and offer two options:

The timer starts when the message is sent.

The timer starts when the message is read.
