Misty Western Ghats. The thrill of mountain climbing. Aranyapatha in Karnataka means adventure. Travelers’ first choice. However, some recent accidents made the forest department frown. Trekkers lost their way and sometimes disappeared. This time the administration moved to ensure the safety of the tourists. Strict guidelines or ‘SOP’ have been issued.
1) Entry prohibited without guide: There is no need to be in danger anymore while looking for thrills on the forest path. According to the new rules of the Karnataka Forest Department, no trekker can enter the forest without an accredited guide. Even if you go alone, you will be provided with a trained guide. One guide for every 10 trekkers is mandatory. Whether everyone in the group stays together or not, that responsibility will be on the guide.
2) Online booking and number control: From now on online registration is required before going to any trekking trail. No access without a permit. A maximum of 150 tourists per day will be allowed on each route to protect the environment. This will make crowd control easier. The environment will also be pollution free.
3) Modern Technology in Surveillance: Karnataka government is emphasizing on the use of technology for the sake of security.
4) Tracking App: Trekkers need to install a special app on their phones. Through this, the movement of tourists can be monitored directly from the base camp.
5) Walkie-talkie: Guides will have GPS enabled walkie-talkies. They will report to the control room at regular intervals.
6) Use of Drones: Thermal cameras and drones will be used for quick rescue if a tourist loses his way or has an accident.
7) Changes in Infrastructure: There will now be warnings on dangerous slopes or steep bends. The trails will be well marked so that no one gets lost. Apart from this, basic facilities like toilets and drinking water are also being provided at the base camp.
The drastic action comes in the wake of the recent disappearance of tourists at popular trekking spots like Tadiandamole. This may lead to some rush of excitement, but informed circles believe that this decision is very important for the safety of tourists and the protection of the mountain environment. So it would be wise to know these new Karnataka rules before packing your bags.
