The incident took place on April 11 at London Southend Airport in the U.K. where flight EJU7008 was preparing to depart for Malaga in Spain.

While taxiing, the captain informed passengers that the aircraft could not safely take off due to weight restrictions, The Independent newspaper reported.

According to the airline, the Airbus A319 exceeded allowable takeoff limits due to a combination of weather conditions and the length of the runway. Measuring just over 6,000 feet, the runway provides less takeoff margin than those at larger international airports, particularly in adverse weather, New York Post reported.

Passengers were presented with several options, including having volunteers disembark, offloading luggage, or delaying the flight entirely.

One passenger told local media that travelers were given around 30 minutes to reach a decision.

Ultimately, five passengers volunteered to leave the aircraft, allowing the flight to proceed.

Fellow passengers reportedly applauded their decision.

The flight departed shortly afterward, arriving in Malaga with only a minor delay.

EasyJet said the affected passengers were rebooked onto later flights at no additional cost and would receive compensation in line with regulations.

The airline emphasized that weight restrictions are a standard safety measure across the aviation industry.

“The safety and welfare of our passengers and crew is always our highest priority,” the airline said in a statement.

Depending on the length of the delay, passengers may receive compensation of up to US$400 per person.
