Asha Bhosle's Passing and Immersion Ceremony
Renowned vocalist Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after a brief illness. In accordance with her last wishes, her ashes were immersed in the Ganga at Varanasi on April 20. Asha Bhosle, who lived to be 92, shared this age with her late sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Reports indicate that her son, Anand Bhosle, along with her granddaughter, Zanai Bhosle, performed the immersion rituals. Following Asha's death, Anand conducted her last rites on April 13, and a week later, the family honored her memory with the immersion ceremony, adhering to traditional practices.
As one of the most prolific voices in Indian cinema, Asha Bhosle was cremated with state honors at Shivaji Park in Mumbai on April 13. Her funeral was attended by a wide array of admirers, including political leaders and members of the film industry. Her remains were displayed at her Lower Parel residence, where many from the music community and political sphere came to pay their respects. The procession to Shivaji Park was attended by Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his deputies, Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with her sisters, Usha Mangeshkar and Meena Khadikar. Reports noted that Zanai Bhosle was visibly emotional during the ceremonies.
Asha Bhosle began her illustrious career with her first film song, 'Chala Chala Nav Bala,' for the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal, and made her Hindi film debut with 'Saawan Aaya' in 1948. After dedicating over seventy years to music, she took on her first film role at the age of 79 in the movie Mai, portraying a mother with Alzheimer's disease. Following her passing, her granddaughter shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing her profound loss and describing Asha as her 'partner in crime' and 'best friend.' She reflected on Asha's vibrant spirit, stating, 'She’s looking down on us all, especially her family, and I believe she’s going to come back to me very soon, because that is what she promised me and told me always!!' Zanai concluded her note by expressing, 'I have lost the love of my life, and there is no bigger grief in the world.'
