This time elections for 294 assembly seats in West Bengal are going to be held in two phases, which is different from the multi-phase voting of previous elections. The first phase of voting will be held on April 23 and the second phase on April 29. Counting of votes will be done on May 4.
In the first phase, voting will be held on 152 seats in 16 districts, while in the second phase, voting will be held on the remaining 142 seats in seven districts, which will complete the election process in the entire state.
This year’s election is being considered a major change in the electoral process of the state. After the one-phase elections in 2001, most elections in West Bengal have been held in multiple phases, including the eight-phase election in 2021. This time, the decision to conduct voting in only two phases has been taken in view of better administrative preparation and strong security arrangements.
On the rejection of the Constitution’s 131st Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, Chief Minister Sarma said, “Women are very sad and they will take revenge from Mamata Banerjee, DMK and Congress.”
This proposed bill to women’s reservation could not get the required two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. A total of 298 MPs voted in favor and 230 against it.
Following the setback, two other bills to delimitation and increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats were not tabled for voting as the government said they were linked to the Women’s Reservation Bill. During the debate in the Lok Sabha, the Center strongly supported 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies.
