India is geared up for this year’s first major multi-sport mega event, sending a 31-player contingent to the Asian Beach Games in Sanya, China, from April 22 to 30.
This will be the sixth edition of the Asian Beach Games, which are returning to the international calendar after a decade-long wait, since the 2016 edition in Da Nang, Vietnam.
The games feature 62 medal events across 14 sports, including many unique sports like Aquathlon, Beach Handball, Teqball and Beach Kabaddi.
India had won 46 medals, including 12 gold medals, from the first five editions, and this time will compete in 18 medal events across four sports: 3×3 Basketball, Beach Kabaddi, Beach Wrestling, and Sailing.
Beach Kabaddi has been the most successful sport for India, having won seven gold medals so far – All five in the women’s and 2 golds in the men’s edition.
The Indian kabaddi teams will be the favourites to win the gold medals once again, alongside the Beach wrestling contingent featuring former Asian Medalist Priya Malik.
In the 3×3 Basketball, India is sending its young and rising men’s team and hoping to repeat the heroics of 2008, where the team won the gold medal.
