A BMW driver somersaulted in the air after smashing into a roundabout at 140mph while trying to escape from police. Ashley Parr, 35, flew through the air in his BMW 3 Series after failing to stop for officers on the A64 near York on July 21, 2025. The housing development site manager sped south on the A1 in North Yorkshire before exiting at junction 42, where he hit the roundabout at speed.
The car was caught on camera shooting into the air before rolling several times and ending up in a roadside hedge. Parr, from Leeds, admitted to dangerous driving, drug-driving and drink driving and was sentenced to 16 months in prison at York Crown Court on Monday.
He was also banned from driving for three years and eight months.
Defence barrister Phil Morris said the crash left Parr unconscious with multiple broken bones including his shoulder and ribs, describing it as a "prolonged period of madness", The Sun reports.
Judge Simon Hickey said immediate custody was the only possible sentence for "driving in such a manner" on "two major arterial roads that run through our country".
A member of the public contacted police to report a vehicle driving dangerously on the A166 at around 9:10pm on July 21, with officers quickly spotting the "erratic" driving near the A64 interchange and activating blue lights.
The BMW initially slowed and moved into lane one but then made a sudden manouevre across the markings and continued along the A64 towards the A1, North Yorkshire Police said.
"The driver failed to stop, reaching speeds of 130mph on the A64 before joining the A1 southbound," a spokesperson added. "Speeds increased to 140mph before the vehicle exited at junction 42 of the A1.
"The driver then failed to negotiate the roundabout, striking it at speed and becoming airborne. The BMW rolled several times before coming to rest in a roadside hedge."
Following the sentencing, Traffic Constable Nick Simpson, who attempted to stop the vehicle, said: "This was extremely dangerous driving that could easily have resulted in the death of other road users, as well as the driver himself.
"We are relentless in our approach to making North Yorkshire's roads safer for everyone. Removing individuals who drive in this manner sends a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated."
