The ongoing Indian Premier League 2026 currently faces an unexpected betting scandal which originated in Punjab but has started to expand. The investigation which began as a local matter has developed into a large-scale money-making operation.
Khanna police discovered multiple illegal betting operations which had resulted in the loss of lakhs of rupees during IPL matches. The Punjab case marks the third IPL betting incident which police had previously investigated before this case. Police in Neemuch Cantt Madhya Pradesh arrested a suspect who operated an illegal online betting site for IPL matches.
The Warangal Task Force police shut down an unlawful betting operation which operated in the Mills Colony area. The police arrested all suspects who were present at the scene while they confiscated ₹1.02 lakh in cash and five smartphones which operated as betting devices throughout the Telangana city.
The Tribune states that Khanna police have frozen bank accounts which contain ₹42.3 lakh because they suspect the money originates from unlawful betting activities. Darpan Ahluwalia, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Khanna, announced that his team investigates all transaction details through which they will identify money movements and find additional suspects involved in the illegal operation.
The police operation advanced because officers seized an online betting operation on April 12 which resulted in their arrest of four suspects. The police arrested four suspects from Khanna who included Dinesh Chhabra, Karan Chhabra, Mahinder Singh, and Naresh Kumar.
Police discovered that this organization operated its betting business for an extensive period before authorities caught them. Officials discovered ₹44,000 in cash together with 11 mobile phones and a laptop during their raid. The devices functioned as essential tools for managing betting activities while also serving as resources to establish user contact who wanted to place bets on IPL matches.
The police investigation has revealed that the criminal operation reached territories outside of their established operational area. The authorities believe that a man from Khanna who now resides in Dubai serves as the primary leader of the entire criminal operation. The case has gained international scope which led to organizations conducting investigations about potential international connections.
The authorities discovered that the defendants employed various banking services and digital platforms to conduct their financial transactions while concealing their illegal activities. The international applications provided users with straightforward betting solutions for IPL matches which made it difficult to monitor their activities.
The police intend to conduct a more thorough investigation of the case. The authorities will investigate the bank accounts belonging to family members and close associates according to SSP Ahluwalia because they believe these accounts contain additional hidden illegal funds.

The Enforcement Directorate and other major agencies have received reports which indicate their upcoming participation in the investigation work that aims to discover all aspects of the financial movement.
Dinesh and Naresh, the main accused in the case, have previous gambling-related offenses according to police records, while other suspects in the case have criminal histories. The duration of the network operation has raised concerns about its timeline.
Police have established a serious legal charge against the case through their addition of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita legal provisions to the investigation. The law establishes penalties of up to seven years in prison for individuals who commit organized petty crime activities. This is the first instance where such a powerful legal provision has been utilized in an IPL betting investigation which takes place in this area.
