Grammy Award-winning musician John Fogerty was in a downward spiral until he met his wife, Julie, while on tour and saved his life. The Creedence Clearwater Revival singer revealed in a recent interview on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast that he had a tumultuous time in his music career.
Despite the success of his thrid solo album, Centerfield, the artist said he felt "miserable and bitter" due to repressed feelings. He also admitted abusing himself with drugs and alcohol. But he was grateful that his wife, Julie, helped him "come out on the good side of it". He added: "If I hadn't met her, I probably would be dead. Simple as that."
Recalling the moment when he met Julie, John said in the podcast: "One day [I] just suddenly met Julie, not expecting to meet the love of my life, the person that I feel that I was destined to meet and the person that would, through her good graces, help me find myself and help me enjoy and find the joy of life again. And it all changed."
Now at 80, John continues to perform and the iconic singer is set to extend his Legacy Tour with new North America dates. He added: "I'm just really happy that my life turned out this way and I get to celebrate that music now."
Much of his pain stemmed from a 50-year-long legal dispute with Fantasy Records over the rights to his music. He has now acquired a majority interest in the global publishing rights to his song catalogue with the group, which includes Proud Mary, Fortunate Son, Bad Moon Rising, Up Around the Bend, Have You Ever Seen Rain and others from Concord for an undisclosed amount.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer told Rogan: "I got sued for sounding like myself. I'm the dad [of these songs], I created them. They never should have been taken away in the first place. And that hijacking left such a massive hole in me. The happiest way to look at it is, yeah it isn't everything.
"It's not a 100% win for me, but it's sure better than it was. I'm really kind of still in shock."
