These days, the increasing crowd on the roads in Nepal is becoming a big challenge for the government. From the capital Kathmandu to the corridors of power, people’s anger is coming out openly. The special thing is that now not only political parties but also school students have joined this protest in large numbers, due to which the movement has got a new and stronger voice. According to the students, if their voice is not heard, this movement may intensify further.

Thousands of students took to the streets in their school uniforms and raised slogans against the government. They had placards in their hands, on which anger against the policies of the government was clearly visible. Student organizations allege that the government is trying to exert pressure instead of listening to them. He says that student unions are being ignored, due to which dissatisfaction in the education system is increasing.

Anger increased due to custom duty decision

Another decision of the government has increased the problems of the general public. The rule of imposing mandatory custom duty on bringing goods worth more than Rs 100 from India has angered the people living in the border areas. The protesters say that this decision has a direct impact on the pockets of the common people. Especially those people who depend on India for their daily needs are being most affected by this policy. People believe that the government should understand the situation of the people before taking such decisions.

Corruption allegations against Home Minister

Amidst this entire controversy, Home Minister Sudan Gurung is also on target. Serious allegations to illegal assets and dubious business are being made against him. Many political parties and social organizations have intensified their demand for his resignation. According to Nepali media reports, Gurung is accused of having assets beyond his income and making suspicious transactions in the stock market.

It has also been claimed that he established financial relations with a person jailed in a money laundering case and invested huge sums in several companies. Apart from this, allegations of misuse of funds to ‘Hami Nepali’, an international non-governmental organization (INGO), have also come to light. It is being said that the money of this organization was transferred to a personal account, due to which the controversy has deepened.

Movement became social issue

Now this protest is not limited to just political circles, but has taken the form of a big social movement. The youth are openly raising their voice against the policies of the government and considering it as an issue to their future. Students and youth say that the government’s decisions can affect their future, so they cannot remain silent. Because of this, the movement is continuously spreading and people from different sections are joining it.

Impact on India-Nepal trade

The impact of trade decisions to India is also clearly visible in this protest. People of border areas, who depend on India for daily needs, are particularly upset with this new custom duty policy. The protesters believe that this decision not only puts economic burden on common citizens, but can also affect the long-standing trade relations between India and Nepal.
