New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a former software engineer was arrested for cultivating ganja plants (marijuana) on the terrace of his house in Hyderabad.

17 ganja plants seized

He was taken into custody after officials from the Prohibition and Excise Department allegedly found him growing the cannabis plants. As many as 17 marijuana plants, which were estimated to yield around 10 kilograms of ganja, were seized by the authorities, reports said.

Sources said Ch Shashidhar, the former techie, had earlier been employed in a software company and quit his job after allegedly getting habituated to consuming ganja. It is alleged that while he was doing the job, the man spent his entire salary on ganja. Authorities said that since he had no means left to purchase ganja, Shashidhar allegedly got seeds and started cultivating the plants in pots on the terrace of his house. Officials pointed out that the plants grew up to three metres and some of them even started flowering.

Case registered

Ghatkesar excise sub-inspector Sangeetha Reddy reportedly said: “He would extract the seeds from ganja he used to buy and began growing the contraband on his terrace.”

After getting information, the Rangareddy district enforcement team, headed by an inspector, raided the house in East Gandhinagar, Nacharam. A case has been registered against the accused, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the alleged illegal cultivation.

In a separate case, two BTech students were arrested in Medipally for selling ganja. The accused, Bandi Arun Kumar and B Ashish, were found in possession of 480gm of the contraband. The two accused were taken into custody by Ghatkesar excise officials.
