News India Live, Digital Desk: If you live in Noida and are freely spilling water, then be careful. The ‘Ground Water Level’ of this hi-tech city adjacent to Delhi is falling at a very scary pace. The latest figures have given sleepless nights to the administration and environmentalists. Many sectors of the city are now on the verge of going into the ‘dark zone’, which simply means that it will become almost impossible to extract water from the ground here in future. The water level is falling by 1 to 1.5 meters every year. According to the report of Noida Authority and Ground Water Department, the groundwater level in most parts of the city is falling by 1 to 1.5 meters every year. Where till a few years ago water was available at 20 to 30 feet, now moisture is not available even after digging 100 to 150 feet. The situation is even more worrying in areas like Sector-62, 63 and Noida Extension (Greater Noida West). Negligence of builders and rampant urbanization are considered to be the main reasons behind this water shortage in Noida. Illegal boring done by builders indiscriminately to construct high-rise societies has hollowed out the land. Apart from this, due to concrete mesh being laid on roads and footpaths throughout the city, rain water is not able to seep into the ground. ‘Rain Water Harvesting’ systems are good on paper, but most of them are lying damaged on the ground. The biggest crisis has deepened in these areas. If reports are to be believed, the water level has fallen fastest in Sector-15, 18, 27 and industrial areas of Noida as well as in densely populated villages. Due to depletion of groundwater, water quality is also being affected. At many places, the TDS level has increased so much that water is no longer fit for drinking and machines are also failing. Authority’s warning: If you do not take care, you will be fined heavily. Noida Authority has now decided to take a strict stance to stop wastage of water. There are preparations to impose heavy fines on those who wash vehicles with pipes, pour water on the road or do commercial boring without permission. Also, final notices are being issued to old societies to fix their harvesting systems. Experts say that if work on ‘water recharge’ is not done soon, Noida will have to face a severe water crisis in the future.
