Pets are no longer just companions at home—they are now shaping how Indians travel. As International Pet Day approaches, new data highlights a growing “pet-first” mindset among travellers, with furry friends increasingly influencing everything from destinations to daily itineraries.
According to recent insights, searches for pet-friendly accommodation have surged globally, reflecting a broader shift in how travel is planned. Indian travellers, in particular, are embracing this change. Many are open to both hotels (62%) and holiday rentals (61%), with pet-friendly policies often becoming the deciding factor. At the same time, nearly half (47%) still leave pets behind during outings, making in-house amenities an important consideration.
This shift is also redefining travel experiences. While travelling with pets, 48% of Indian pet parents opted for nature hikes in parks or rural areas, while 59% explored pet-friendly city centres. Dining preferences are evolving too, with 64% choosing dog-friendly cafés, patios or restaurants, and an equal number seeking out pet-friendly beaches or swimming spots.
Transport choices further underline this trend. A significant 93% of Indian travellers prefer flexible road trips, making it easier to include pets in their journeys. This growing preference for ground travel signals a more spontaneous and inclusive approach to holidays.
As highlighted by Booking.com, pets are no longer an afterthought but a central part of travel decision-making. From accommodation to activities and transport, they are redefining what a modern family holiday looks like.
