Amid intensifying preparations for local body elections in Gujarat, the State Election Commission has issued a significant directive aimed at improving transparency in the electoral process. According to sources in Gandhinagar, political parties and candidates will now be required to disclose all expenses incurred on social media campaigns.

Close Monitoring of Digital Campaigning

Election campaigning is no longer limited to rallies and public meetings. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have become central tools for outreach, with candidates investing heavily in online promotions. Recognising this shift, the commission has clarified that all digital campaign expenses will now be counted as part of a candidate’s official election expenditure.

Focus on Transparency and Spending Control

Under the new rules, candidates must provide detailed accounts of spending on paid advertisements, social media management, and digital content creation. The move is intended to curb unchecked election spending and ensure a level playing field for all candidates. It is also expected to help prevent misuse of social media platforms during elections.
