New center for type 2 diabetes in India
New Delhi: A worrying health report to India has come out. A study conducted by experts from 11 countries has revealed that India has now become the new global epicenter of Type 2 diabetes. A few decades ago, China was at the top of the list, but now the situation has completely changed due to changes in lifestyle. This increasing burden of metabolic diseases is not only affecting our economy but is also taking away the happiness of millions of families.
Change in India’s situation
In 1990, China had the highest number of cases of type 2 diabetes, while India was second. But the figures for 2023 show that India has now come to the first position in the Asia-Pacific region. This analysis is based on data from ‘Global Burden of Disease’. According to the study, India and China have the heaviest burden of five serious metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high BMI, bad cholesterol and fatty liver. Researchers have conducted an in-depth study of data from 11 countries.
Health experts’ opinion
According to study author Anoop Mishra, India tops the list in terms of deaths due to type 2 diabetes. Although China is ahead in other diseases, India’s second position is worrying. The country recorded more than 2.1 crore cases and about 5.8 lakh deaths due to diabetes alone in 2023. These figures show that a large population of the country is in the grip of this silent killer, which needs to be stopped immediately.
Lifestyle and health problems
Experts believe that problems like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and fatty liver are deeply inter. Their main reasons are poor eating habits and lack of physical activity. If these are not taken care of in time, then these diseases can become the basis of life-threatening conditions like kidney failure, heart attack, serious liver problems, paralysis and cancer in future. Modern lifestyle and excessive consumption of fast food is further increasing this crisis.
future challenges
According to the data, 2,13,45,118 cases of type 2 diabetes and 5,78,367 deaths were recorded in India in 2023. At the same time, in China this number was 1,09,40,382 and 1,72,911 respectively. Of the approximately 49 million patients with diabetes across the Asia-Pacific region, 54.1 percent are men. High blood pressure remains the biggest threat in the region, causing 62.7 lakh deaths. This gap clearly reflects India’s weak health security and deteriorating habits.
The situation may become more serious by 2030
The study warns that the burden of these diseases is expected to increase by a whopping 1.7 to 3.7 times between 1990 and 2023. It is estimated that by 2030 this situation will become even worse. High blood pressure will remain the biggest cause of death in the future also. In such a situation, it has now become mandatory to change public health policies and bring awareness among the people. Only a healthy diet and regular exercise can save us from this future crisis.
