Featuring Jaafer Jackson, the nephew of the legendary artist, the film generated significant excitement prior to its release. However, it has since received predominantly negative feedback from critics. The film's ratings on Rotten Tomatoes reflect this trend, starting at a disappointing 27 percent and only slightly improving to 35 percent after 101 reviews.

Jaafer Jackson's portrayal marks his first major role, yet the film has struggled to resonate with audiences. Critics have described it as ‘bland’ and ‘problematic,’ particularly for its avoidance of key controversies surrounding Jackson's life. The BBC labeled it as a ‘really, really bad film,’ while another review characterized it as ‘a bland and barely competent daytime TV movie.’ Despite the involvement of a family member, the film has failed to capture the public's attention.

Conversely, the Tribune New Service praised the film's music and acknowledged Jaafer Jackson's potential as a star, although they noted the film's ‘uncomfortably problematic’ aspects. The Guardian's review criticized the film for being ‘frustratingly shallow’ and failing to delve into the most significant moments of Jackson's life. The biopic chronicles Jackson's journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 at Motown to his rise as a solo superstar.

Produced by Graham King, known for the Oscar-winning film Bohemian Rhapsody, which focused on Freddie Mercury, this biopic aims to shed light on Michael Jackson's legacy. Jaafer Jackson expressed his dedication to the role, stating, “It was a process that I really had to earn, and it really proved to the filmmakers and myself and my family that I can get to that point where I can pull it off.” The film is scheduled for theatrical release on April 24, 2026.
