Tilak Varma reveals Rohit Sharma's heartwarming advice amidst form slump
Cricket Gully | April 23, 2026 3:39 AM CST

Tilak Varma has attributed his sudden turnaround in IPL 2026 to a specific piece of advice from Rohit Sharma, revealing that the senior batter urged him to “take 15-20 balls” before accelerating. The disclosure follows Varma’s unbeaten 101 off 45 balls against Gujarat Titans, an innings that came after a prolonged lean phase. Entering the match with just 43 runs in five innings at an average of 8.60, Varma’s position in the XI had drawn scrutiny before the knock reset the narrative.

Speaking after the game, Varma outlined the simplicity of the message, stating,

“I haven’t taken it too much on me that I was not in good form. I was talking especially with Rohit bhai. He was saying to me: 'Tu khel le. 15-20 balls bas khel le. Tujhe pata hai teri captability kya hai. 15 balls khel le fir tu kya karega hum sab ko pata hai. Situation mat dekh, kuch mat dekh, pehle 15 balls khel le, uske baad jo hoga, baad mein dekhte hain.” (You play, take your 15-20 balls, and just see them out because once you do that, everyone knows what you are capable of. We’ll see what happens after that).

From slow start to controlled acceleration

The execution mirrored the advice with statistical clarity. Varma scored 14 runs off his first 15 deliveries, before shifting gears dramatically to add 87 runs from the next 30 balls. The innings structure highlighted a deliberate pacing approach rather than immediate aggression, contrasting with his earlier outings this season.

Reflecting on the shift, he said,

“That was in my mind – that I would just play fifteen balls. After that, I will see. When I had played those fifteen balls, I knew automatically: ‘Ab main maarunga.’”

The change in approach also addressed situations in previous matches where he had limited time at the crease, particularly during accelerated chases.

The innings not only marked his maiden IPL century but also aligned with Mumbai Indians’ requirement for stability in the middle order during a fluctuating campaign.

Context within Mumbai Indians’ campaign

For Mumbai Indians, the performance contributed to only their second win of the season, underlining both the impact and timing of Varma’s contribution. The team’s batting unit had struggled for consistency, making the structured approach noteworthy within the broader campaign.

Varma acknowledged earlier inconsistencies, stating,

“I haven’t taken it too much on me that I was not in good form.”

His innings suggested a recalibration rather than a drastic technical change, focusing on time spent at the crease. While the approach delivered immediate results, its sustainability within a format driven by early momentum remains subject to match conditions and opposition strategies.
