India, Germany seal defence roadmap in Berlin

New Delhi: India and Germany on Wednesday concluded a roadmap for defence industry cooperation and identified priority areas for co-development and production of military equipment. Defence minister Rajnath Singh is on an official visit to Berlin. The agreement was part of the bilateral talks he held with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius.

Singh, who also met other senior German leaders, said the partnership has seen "considerable momentum" in defence and pitched for greater industrial collaboration.

Officials said the two ministers discussed security and defence issues, including priority areas for co-development and co-production of defence equipment. "The defence industrial cooperation roadmap and implementing arrangement for cooperation in UN peacekeeping training were inked and exchanged during the meeting."

The roadmap is aimed at identifying key technologies and weapon systems that are needed by both nations and can be co-developed.

Singh was accompanied by an Indian defence industry delegation that is looking to collaborate with Germany, especially with specialised small- and medium-scale entities. In his talks with Pistorius, Singh discussed the recent India-EU Security and Defence Partnership, describing it as a significant step in deepening engagement.

"Both agreed to leverage this framework, both bilaterally and in the wider European context, for tangible outcomes that will strengthen regional stability, enhance joint capabilities and reinforce the Indo-German strategic alignment," officials said.

Singh also said that amid the current geopolitical environment, India and Germany have been providing stability and strength to the global economy.
