Asda has confirmed a major change in UK stores on Thursday to celebrate St George's Day.

The supermarket giant, which has its headquarters in Leeds in north England, has confirmed to the Express that it is planning to hold events and in-store displays - presumably only in its stores in England - to mark the occasion on April 23.

In previous years, Asda put up England flag displays in stores, inviting customers to join in while others saw staff dress up in red and white and pin up England St George's Cross flags.

The exact details of Asda's plans for 2026 have not yet been revealed, but Asda has confirmed its stores are taking part in the big day on Thursday.

Asda has often encouraged its staff to decorate stores for England matches during major tournaments too. In 2021, Asda changed the name of one branch to Asda Gareth Southgate.

Colleagues at the store came up with the idea as a way of paying homage to the England manger, who has led the Three Lions to the last four of the tournament - matching his achievement at the 2018 World Cup.

The store even had a new store sign created ahead of the semi-final with Denmark at the time.

Saint George's Day is the annual celebration of the patron saint of England. The annual day sees events held across England every year as English men and women honour the patron saint of England on the anniversary of his death in 303 AD. Though St George wasn't English, it is said the Church adopted him after his heroics leading crusaders in battle.

Back in the 15th century, St George's Day was a national celebration of equal importance with Christmas. Now, the day is the English equivalent of St Patrick's Day over in Ireland, St David's Day in Wales, or St Andrew's Day in Scotland, and each year services are held in churches for St George's Day, and events are usually held in Trafalgar Square (which this year were held on April 19).
