New Delhi: US President Donald Trump is once again embroiled in controversies. He has shared a scathing letter on his social media platform Truth Social, in which some countries including India and China have been described as ‘hellholes’. This statement has come amid the ongoing debate on the policy of birthright citizenship. Trump claimed that taking advantage of this policy, foreigners come to America and call their families.
Trump wrote that a child born here immediately becomes an American citizen and then brings his entire family to America from China, India or any other ‘hell’. He said that due to this the rights and opportunities of American citizens are being snatched away.
Allegations on tech jobs
Trump alleged that the jobs in California’s tech sector are mostly occupied by people from India and China. This has reduced the opportunities for the local people. However, he did not provide any concrete evidence for this claim. He described ‘chain migration’ as a big threat to America and said that large-scale immigration is affecting the cultural and linguistic identity of the country.
attack on birthright citizenship
Trump strongly criticized the birthright citizenship policy. He says that this issue should be decided by voting at the national level instead of courts or lawyers. Citing a social media poll and claiming that most people are in favor of ending this policy, Trump said that America is the only country in the world that is continuing this ‘stupid’ policy.
He described the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as a ‘criminal’ organization and suggested that it should be prosecuted under RICO laws that fight organized crime. Trump alleges that immigrants are misusing health services and other public facilities, the burden of which is falling on ordinary tax-paying Americans.
fear of diplomatic impact
India is a strategic partner country of America. In such a situation, use of such derogatory language for countries like India and China can create resentment at the diplomatic level. This statement has come at a time when a legal debate is going on in the US Supreme Court regarding birthright citizenship.
