Sir Keir Starmer must be hauled before a top Westminster committee to clear up if he has misled the House of Commons or not, MPs have demanded. Karl Turner, the Member of Parliament for East Hull - who was kicked out of Labour owing to his opposition to the scrapping of jury trials - has joined the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and others in requesting the Speaker refer the Prime Minister to the Privileges Committee.
Opponents of the Prime Minister have repeatedly suggested he has misled the House when he claimed that "due process was followed" in the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson to the post of US Ambassador. Last week Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, demanded he resign over the scandal in which the government is embroiled.
Mr Turner, 55, piled on the pressure this morning in a post on social media confirming that he had written to the Speaker, Sir Lindsey Hoyle, to enable MPs to question the "discrepancies" in the Prime Minister's various statements. The letter reads that the East Hull MP is writing to "raise a matter of serious concern regarding the conduct of the Prime Minister during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday 22 April 2026."
At PMQ's this week the Prime Minister claimed that the sacked foreign office Mandarin, Sir Olly Robbins, had said "no pressure existed whatsoever" when it came to the appointment of the disgraced peer to the Washington posting. Mr Turner, and Mrs Badenoch both say that this is inaccurate, and could be misleading the House of Commons.
Earlier in the week Sir Olly made clear that he felt pressure was being applied on the foreign office to get Lord Mandelson in post as quickly as possible. Mrs Badenoch has is, according to reports by the Times newspaper, pressing for Sir Kier's referral to the Privileges Committee claiming he misled MPs.
It was this same committee which concluded that the former prime minister, Boris Johnson, had lied to the House of Commons over partygate. Following the accusation Mr Johnson was forced to resign after dozens of his own ministers stepped down in the space of 24-hours. Sir Keir himself repeatedly demanded Mr Johnson step aside, accusing him of misleading the House both advertantly and inadvertently.
When presented with a series of tweets made by Sir Keir in 2022 by the Daily Express, the Prime Minister's spokesmen refused to comment on comments made by Sir Keir when he was leader of the opposition.
Now Mrs Badenoch has suggested Sir Keir misled the Commons when he said "due process" had been followed in the appointment of Lord Mandelson as British ambassador to the US. Sir Ed Davey, NIgel Farage, and the leaders of every other party in the House of Commons have made the same accusation.
The Prime Minister has denied misleading MPs. Sir Keir's former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney has also been summoned to appear before the Foreign Affairs Committee next week. The row over Sir Olly's sacking dominated the Prime Minister's Questions clash with Kemi Badenoch.
He insisted Sir Olly's evidence about Lord Mandelson exonerated him over accusations that he had misled MPs. The mandarin's testimony "puts to bed all the allegations levelled at me by those opposite in relation to dishonesty", the Prime Minister said.
Sir Keir's fate could be decided if Labour MPs move against him after May's elections for English councils and the Scottish and Welsh parliaments. YouGov projections indicated Labour was on course for disastrous results in its former London and Welsh strongholds.
