New Delhi: Morgan has just unveiled the Supersport 400 as the most powerful production model ever from the iconic British marque. The brand has taken the already standout Supersport and dialled things up by miles.
At the core is the uprated version of BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, now making 402 bhp, which is 67 bhp higher than the standard model, with torque remaining unchanged at 500 Nm. Power continues to be sent to the back wheel through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Even though the performance has gone up, the car keeps the lightweight aspect, standing somewhere at 1,170 kg, putting it at the same weight as the Mazda Miata RF. The added power makes for improved performance, going 0–100 km/h sprint now taking just 3.6 seconds, which is tenths of the standard car and as a top speed of 290 kph.
Morgan Supersport 400 mechanical upgradesMorgan’s upgrade isn’t just down to the powertrain as the Supersport 400 comes with new forged 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tyres, along with functional vents integrated into the front wings to aid cooling for the six-cylinder engine. There is also a newly developed exhaust system that enhances the car’s acoustic character, delivering a more pronounced soundtrack.
Chassis upgrades are glaringly there as well, with 24-way adjustable dampers offered as standard to improve handling precision and adaptability. The car still comes with an analogue, driver-focused philosophy, but there are tradeoffs, like the manual gearbox making way for the automatic.
While less well-known around the world, the Morgan has a huge fan base in the UK. In fact, the former Top Gear and Grand Tour presenter is well-known for owning and being a bit of a patron for the brand over the years. The brand’s products are a bit of a stepback into the time in terms of design philosophy, for a world that doesn’t exist but still glorious.
