New Delhi: The rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman, daughter of a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, at her home in southeast Delhi’s Kailash Hills on the morning of April 22 has sent shockwaves across the national capital and the rest of the country. According to a report by news agency ANI, the accused Rahul Meena showed no signs of remorse during the interrogation. He reportedly raped another woman on April 21 in Alwar and fled after threatening her. So far, he has allegedly shown calm and composure in the face of questioning by the police.

Accused reveals how he entered the house

He allegedly told the investigating officers that “if didi had given the money, this would not have happened,” stressing that he went to the victim’s house with the primary intention to rob. He added that the incident “just happened,” according to the report. He also said the family of the IRS officer treated him very well. He received a salary of Rs 20,000, excluding bonuses, and entered the house by falsely claiming the victim’s mother called him to give money. He reportedly told the investigators, “Aunty ne bulaya tha for money” (Aunty had called to give money).

How did he execute the crime?

Meena was allegedly addicted to online gambling and used the money earned to form illicit relationships with girls. He was an employee at the victim’s house for almost eight months before he was dismissed from the service six weeks ago over alleged financial misconduct. He was familiar with the security of the victim’s Delhi home and on the morning of the fateful day, he entered the house and went straight to the study room on the rooftop, where the woman was studying.

He allegedly strangled the woman and tried to rape her. Facing resistance, he hit her with a heavy object, which left her severely injured and unconscious. Then the accused raped her and dragged her downstairs to use her fingerprint to open the locker. However, the police suspect the victim was dead by then, so the fingerprint plan became ineffective. Then the accused allegedly broke the locker open with a screwdriver and took out cash and jewellery, change his clothes and fled the scene.
